This camp is designed to not only teach science, but to provide students the opportunity to DO science. We will explore different science topics throughout the week, each day filled with exciting demonstrations and hands on experiments that will help students better understand the science behind how the world works. We will discover how to make ice cream, what makes a light stick glow, and why a roller coaster doesn’t fall in the middle of a loop. Students will also have the opportunity to take home several great demonstrations.

MAD SCIENTIST MEETS ANGRY BIRDS

This hands-on camp explores the science behind the Angry Birds and their war with those rotten pigs. Come discover how gravity, energy, friction and launch angles all come together to make that perfect launch! As they investigate the math and science behind the popular game, campers will help to build both miniature and life-size launchers.
About the
Director: For the past eight years, Jake Palumbo has taught science to students
of all ages. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University
of Richmond. He currently teaches Chemistry at the AACS Upper School, and has
also taught Biology, Physics, and Physical Science.
7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS

Utilizing relevant interactive exercises, plus humor and videos, students will laugh while they learn how to gain greater control of their lives, build relationships high in trust and increase self confidence and interpersonal skills.

This is an intensive, focused review of the math and verbal sections of the SAT, as well as a condensed review of the writing section, designed to help students maximize their scores. Two SAT/PSAT tests will be given – one at the beginning and one at the end of the course so that progress may be measured.
Program Note: The
SAT Test will be administered on the first day and seventh day of class, where
sessions will be 4 hours in length, from 8:00am – 12:00pm.
About the Director: Eric Nebbia holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Swarthmore College and a Masters Degree from the University of Notre Dame. He currently teaches high school English at Annapolis Area Christian School. Mr. Nebbia has been teaching and tutoring high school students on the new SAT since the spring of 2006.

writing camp will focus on finding inspiration in the simplest of things from
play-dough to orange caution cones. A
story hides in everything. This workshop
will help any level writer use his/her imagination to find and create
stories. Writing skills will improve
through the use of imagery and character development in the creative writing
pieces.
About the Director: Robin Talbot holds a Bachelor’s degree in Writing and a Master’s degree in Instructional Design. She has been teaching 8th grade Language Arts, focusing on creative writing, for six years; four of them at AACS.

This
camp is being offered to 8th-10th graders for those students just beginning
algebra, struggled with algebra for the 2012-2013 school year, or desire a
refresher on pre-algebra skills.
This course will meet for two weeks, two hours each day. The subjects to
be covered in this course will include adding, subtracting, multiplying and
dividing fractions and decimals. We will also deal with percentiles,
ratios and proportions. Other skills needed for algebra include square
roots and squares, exponents, knowledge of how to find the perimeter and area of
various shapes using algebra and least common multiples and greatest common
factors.
About the Director: Cindy Grunert has been in the education field for 34 years, working with students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. She has been tutoring in high school math for the last 4 years and attends three high school math classes in order to stay current on the interworking of the AACS mathematics department.
BIBLE BASICS

This class is geared towards students entering their first year of high school at AACS. The class will help you understand the very foundational concepts of the Bible in order to feel comfortable going in to any AACS Bible class.
About the Director: Rob Irias has been teaching Bible at AACS for 7 years and is very passionate about the Bible and its relevance in our lives. He attended Baptist Bible College and has been a follower of Jesus Christ for 21 years.
CREATIVE ARTS CAMPS

About the Director: Melissa Hathway began dancing at age 3 and has been passionate about it ever since. After performing professionally for the West End Dinner Theater in Alexandria, King's Dominion Paramount Productions, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Melissa's dance skills and work ethic earned her a role in the Broadway Company of CATS for two years. She has since focused on early childhood creative movement and motor development and turned her creative energy, talent, skills, love for the arts and working with children toward the opening of her own dance, music and art studio, Arts 'n Motion.

As
one of the premier percussion events in the region, we offer young
percussionists the resources to become well-rounded musicians! Topics include
snare drum, drum set, mallet percussion, world percussion, marching percussion,
audition preparation and sight reading. Students will perform in concert
and marching ensembles, and participate in master classes with highly respected
artist-educators. The camp will conclude with a public performance.
Less experienced students will be introduced to techniques and styles they may
not have imagined; while more advanced students will acquire detailed knowledge
that will benefit them should they consider a music career. Visit

About the Director: Mike Ranelli instructs the AACS percussion ensemble and
marching percussion programs. He also performs regularly with the
National Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Olney Theatre and many other
professional ensembles. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music
and a member of the Vic Firth Education Team.

Join us for this creative dance camp that is
designed to introduce participants to all types of dance genres including, but
not limited to, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, ballet and lyrical. In a
relaxed and fun atmosphere, you will learn dance basics, refine your muscle
conditioning, and be encouraged to create your own choreography. We will spare some down time, through
age-appropriate videos and movies, to discuss how dance legends, performers and
choreographers have influenced the art of dance for today's dancers.
Wondering if dancing is for you? This camp is tailored to meet the
dynamic dance interests of beginners as well as the more seasoned intermediate
dancers. Give it a try- it's not national television, just dancing fun!
Wyndee McGovern is the Artistic Director and Owner of Spotlight Studio of Dance in Millersville, MD overseeing a complete program of Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical & Hip-Hop for dancers ages 2 to 18. She is a Master Instructor certified by Dance Masters of America in 1995 and is currently a member of The Dance Teachers Association of Virginia, Chapter 45.

THE ART OF NEEDLE AND THREAD: SEWING CAMP

Campers will learn essential sewing skills and
create beautiful sewing projects. Projects vary each year so students who
attended previously should look forward to new projects and more confidence in
their knowledge.
Level 1: An introduction to machine and hand sewing, this course will teach
student to operate a sewing machine, cut and pin fabric, and create beautiful
hand-made projects.
Level 2: Students will build upon their knowledge of basic sewing and learn
more sophisticated skills such as installing zippers, sewing curved seams and
creating ruffles.
About the Director: Loris Nebbia, a lifetime
sewer, teacher, home economic club leader, and founder of Eight Hands Around
Creativity Guild, leads an experienced team of instructors including Andrea
Nebbia, Valerie Nebbia, and Jen Palumbo to help teach basic sewing skills.
